Now that I can take pictures inworld, I’ve been trying to improve my fledgling photography skills. I’ve read some wonderful tutorials (here and a whole list of them here) and I’ve been flipping through other virtual world blogs, pornography and Flickr streams when I can find the time. Casja Lillihook‘s column at SC Disco is a great source for amazing SL photography. (Her excellent tutorials are here.)
As I clicked around some fashion blogs, I found myself being a complete hypocrite. I’ve always been a staunch believer of individuality and creativity in virtual worlds. Be who you are, and if you’re happy, then you’re doing it right. You could be a giant penis wearing a tutu, and I wouldn’t care. (Although I would call you a dick.) But at most of the SL fashion blogs and Flickr streams, I hated the looks I was seeing. And I wondered why people would want to look like that.
And it’s not just the fashion, the shapes and the baggy asses. The harsh shadows and strange poses made me cringe, as well. I freely admit my hypocritical ways. I am ashamed.
But like any intelligent, thinking person, I came to see the error of my ways. If you like your pouty, fishfaced, baggy ass, gap crotched look, who am I to judge you (out loud)? I can’t stand to see prejudice in any form, so shame on me. Even fashion bloggers are really blogging for themselves first, because they enjoy it (and dig the free swag). It’s not my place to judge anyone for wearing jeans so low their gynecologist would blush. Live and let live and all that. (Just wipe off the chair when you get up, m’kay?)
If you’re not having fun, you’re not doing it right.
And I’m having fun.
p.s. The dress I’m wearing is from the Art of Escher sim, at the EPOCH event. I didn’t write down the designer and I can’t be assed to look for it now. You should go look at it yourself anyway. It’s more than a shopping event, the entire build is a work of art.
My shoes are Moxie, from Maitreya. They’re mesh, and I had problems getting shadows to work with them. I also had to make my legs skinny to wear them, which ticked me off. Hair is from LOQ and skin is Curio, as always.
The incredible build is from Nodari.

You’re one to watch you are
I like your style (and your taste in fashion is also good).
Hey, you’re a great photographer. Not that I’m jealous. But I have graphics envy
And I admit I’m a hypocrite, too. I’ve looked at the blogs you mention with a look of disgust on my face and a huge question mark hovering above my head. But then I thought maybe they just want to express something I don’t understand. Which is fine. Because sometimes it’s nice to be ignorant.
So I happily return to your amazing blog with all its beauty both in words and pics. ^_^
These are very good. The lack of shadows under your feet on the first one is one of those SL glitches that drives me nuts. Sometimes it does that and I’ve not quite figured out how to prevent it.
But I’m seeing a nice control of light and shadow in these to give some very neat and emotive images. I”m partial to number five – in part because I never manage to do that look right myself – but you have.
This may be a situation where my being Fashion Oblivious may be an advantage. (chuckle)
I do agree however that if you’re not having fun then you are indeed not doing things right.
You said exactly what I’ve been thinking for so long but a lot more eloquently. Live and let live. Great pictures! <3
YAY thanks errybody!! <3
Your post spoke directly to me
I cant stand all these fashion blogs where the avatar is photographed in a very akward positions, pouty fish lips and vacant looks.>_< But its their thing, not mine.
Your photos are nothing like that…they are..wonderful
